Course Descriptions:Explores intersections of ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, and class through autobiographical and testimonial writings by Chicana, Mexican-origin, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and mixed-heritage Latinas in the U.S. Students produce multimedia digital stories about their own lives and identities. (Prereq: GE Area A1 and A2 and A3)
Course Outcomes: Taking the Latina Life Stories class was an eye opening experience, giving me a different perspective on the Chicano history. While attending this course, I got to learn about the women’s suffrage in the Chicano community, and all the secrets they kept to themselves because their voices were not considered to be that important in the culture. Throughout this class, we read a lot of material on the Chicana women and how the male was the oppressor in the lives of many women. Reading about these social problems was something that I could connect to, due to the fact that in my family in Mexico, I still get to see the machista mentality oppressing the female community. In the class we talked a lot about how the female community was expected to take care of the kids, and how on some cases it was not allowed for them to express their opinions on some topics. Reading “los testimonios” was really thought provoking, learning about all the secrets they kept regarding their everyday issues with their own community or family was quite disconcerting. Towards the end of the semester of the semester, we got to write about our own personal issues that we see in our community or family, regarding the machismo mentality. At the end of the semester, we got to make a video project which was also part of the course HCOM 328l, talking about an important aspect in our lives. Many of my classmates talked about really controversial issues, but I decided to talk about my childhood and how tough it was for my mom, brother and myself.
