Directed toward Spanish majors preparing for their Capstone experience, this course aims to guide the student in the process of completing a capstone proposal and initiating the preliminary steps toward the graduation ePortfolio. The ePortfolio provides evidence that a student is making satisfactory progress toward meeting the Core requirements and Major Learning Outcomes (MLOs) for the Spanish B.A.
As an active participant in this course, I can say with all assurance that this course is truly helpful to the students enrolled in the Spanish Major. While enrolled in this class, we were given the opportunity to learn about different sources that we can use for our final project, which serves to fulfill our Capstone. While researching and obtaining the resources for our project, we were able to learn how to distinguish which are considered primary sources and secondary sources in order to provide peer reviewed evidence. Another material that we came across and learned the importance of it for our final project, was proper citation between MLA and APA with a focus of our topic being based more formally in APA due to the scientific nature of linguistics. Due to our topic being about the linguistic pathway between Mozambic in Spanish, on the Iberian Peninsula. This course helped me realize how to structure my time into completing my research project, by showing me all the requirements I need to fulfill in order to complete my final project in the required proper manner. In this class we were also required to work on our E-portafolio, which is required to be completely done by the time of graduation, in which we talk about our learning experience at CSUMB. Some of the categories we need to fulfill in this E-portafolio are; a class description and the MLOs it covers, as well as a proper summary of our Service Learning Experience and our topic for the final research project.
MLO 1 Language Proficiency - Language Proficiency Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines
MLO 2 Linguistics - develop their knowledge of fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and are able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven small-scale research studies pertaining current issues in these areas.
MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge - Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
MLO 6: Research and Technology 6.1 Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies. 6.2 Students use appropriate technology in research studies relative to Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures. 6.3 Students collect, manage, and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
