Course Description: The Aztec, or Aztlaneca Mexica, took to capturing and collecting the art and culture of all those domains that they conquered and subjugated. As a result, Aztec art, thought, and culture reflect an eclectic mixture of the many peoples and cultures of the empire. Explores the origins, art, language, and culture of a Mesoamerican civilization that was unique for its emphasis on human heart excision, but exclusively Mesoamerican in its art, architecture, and ideology.
Course Outcomes: While attending this course, I managed to learn about the Aztec civilization, and their passage from Aztlan to the valley of Mexico. Learning about this civilization was an amazing experience, for the reason that I never got the chance to learn about this part of the Mexican History while I attended school in Michoacán, Mexico. I was fascinated with how easy and entertaining the teacher made this experience, he managed to teach us all about the social structure, the roles that each person had and how their religious beliefs impacted the community. Another interesting topic we talked about was the army they had, how powerful their will to fight was, and how ascending in the social structure depended on marrying or capturing warriors from other tribes. The section that really captured my attention was the art that was produced in this community. Professor, Ruben Mendoza, showed us the images of the paintings that have been found, and some of his own personal collection of figurines. I was really impressed with the Aztec ceramics and its process, this art form caught my attention and since I found it so fascinating, I decided to do a presentation about it. Here I have the first presentation I did for the course, on this presentation I talked about ceramics and the process of creating it. During this semester, Dr. Mendoza, managed to take the class to the de Young Museum to experience the new Teotihuacan Exhibition. While visiting this exhibition, I got to see the ceramics made by the Aztec civilization, and I also got to learn about the murals and weapons that were displayed on the exhibition.
This course satisfies the MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge for the reason that I got to learn about the Aztec civilization. Being a part of the Mexican history, l got to learn about this cultural aspect of this powerful civilization on the pre columbian era. I wish to study the aspect of the Aztec art and community in the future, and I would also like to teach my future students about this civilization that made a huge mark in the Mexican history.
