In this class, we were given the opportunity to learn about many countries in central america, south america and north america. While studying the countries, we got to learn about the precolombina era, and how the lifestyle and languages were in the native communities. After learning about the native groups, we would then concentrate on the Spanish conquest of the countries we talked about, and how the country changed after the Spaniards taking over. To conclude such activity, we would talk about the political or social issues they might be facing. Throughout the course, we also talk about how the way we speak come from, for example, why we use the “ñ” and how some words we have in the alphabet come from the Greeks. A unique aspect of this class was the fact that everyday, we would have a “dictado” where the professor would use academic language and we were required to write it down properly, without any grammatical mistakes, this activity was something that I had not done since I was in middle school. As we were close to ending the semester, a required presentation and final essay was due. The presentation consisted of a country, and we were required to cover all the historic aspects of it, and economic, as well as social aspects. My presentation was about Cuba, and the main aspects I talked about were political and the natural resources they export the most, and how this affects their economy. The other assignment, we were given the opportunity to talk about any topic we desired, so I decided to talk about the Spanish Conquest in Mexico, and I made a connection to the letter the Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, sent to the Pope and the King of Spain, Felipe VI. In this letter, AMLO, suggests an apology to the native communities that were damaged during the Spanish Conquest, and with this letter, the Pope apologize for the actions caused by the church, but such response was not obtained by the king.
Major Learning Outcomes
MLO 1 Language Proficiency - Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines
