Reading and discussion of selected masterworks of literature as they reflect the historical, political, and social context of the Latin American and Caribbean experience. Students are introduced to critically reading, writing, and discussing the form and content of these literary masterpieces. Taught in Spanish.
In this class, I was given the opportunity to learn about important literature masterpieces from Latin America, and other Spanish speaking regions. This class was full of some of the best readings that I have come across, like the reading “La Ciudad y los Perros” by the peruvian, Vargas Llosa. The reading by Vargas Llosa was a difficult text to comprehend, but it helped me prepare for every assignment that was in the syllabus. This book was full of details and an interesting scenario, where confrontations between the school members escalate to the death of a student. This course helped us analyze the importance of literature and the true meaning behind it, as well as any possible meanings that could relate to social or political issues that were being faced by the author or people in the region. While enrolled in this course, I got to analyze readings that would vary from poes, testimonies, or even short stories. During the readings, we would analyze every literary term, specially in the poetry sections. These type of activities helped me understand poetry at a deeper level, and doing so would help me in future classes. After every reading, Professor Cortez would make us gather into small groups were we would then try to analyze the assigned readings and try to break down the possible meanings behind it. Just like this course was one of the most interesting ones, I needed to improve my studying skills to prepare for any assignment, or class in general, since we were required to participate.
